Dire Wolf Dog: Discover the Famous Wolf in Game of Thrones

Table of Contents

We’ve all watched Game of Thrones at least once. If you’re anything like us, you probably realized that one of the most iconic and recognizable animals in Westeros is actually a dog: the dire wolf. These ferocious beasts are known throughout the Seven Kingdoms for their hunting prowess, strength, and speed. Not only do they hunt down other wild animals with ease; they’re also able to take down mammoths! The imagery of these majestic creatures chasing down their prey on foot or in snow-clad landscapes is so captivating that it almost seems like this was what happened in real life. That being said, there are two breeds of dire wolves in Westeros: Grey Wolves and Stone Wolves. Let’s take a look at where each one comes from and how they can be used as important characters in George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF).

What dog is the dire wolf in Game of Thrones?

The dire wolf is actually a wolf. It’s quite possible that these wolves are grey wolves, which were native to Westeros before humans settled the continent. You can imagine how the ice-rich environment of the north influenced the color of their fur and made them darker than their cousins in other regions of Westeros.
Grey Wolves are known for being skilled hunters and highly intelligent. They’re able to navigate dense forests and are also excellent swimmers. As hunting dogs, they have incredible instincts that help them track down prey in a variety of terrains. Their intelligence makes it easy for them to learn new tricks and perform tasks like herding or retrieving birds for their owners.
Stone Wolves are said to be less intelligent than Grey Wolves; however, they still hunt well and have great stamina. You should also know that these wolves were domesticated by humans in order to use their speed as mounts or pack animals. This means if you have deep pockets, you could get one of these wolves as your own dire wolf companion!

Which direwolf did Arya see?

Arya saw a Grey Wolf when she was at The House of Black and White. This is because the Stark family came from the North, where Grey Wolves are the most common. Dire Wolves are the offspring between Grey Wolves and their mate, a female Stone Wolf. Stone Wolves are much larger than Grey Wolves, but they don’t have nearly as much stamina. Their speed comes from their size.

The direwolf is one of the most famous animals in Game of Thrones! It’s said that Stone Wolves are larger than Grey Wolves and can run much faster; this could be what Arya saw when she went to visit Jaqen H’ghar at The House of Black and White!

Who is the biggest wolf in Game of Thrones?

The Grey Wolf is the largest of the two dire wolves in Westeros, weighing around 200 pounds. They are also physically different than their smaller counterparts. This wolf is almost always seen running with its tail raised high and its teeth bared.
This wolf is considered to be an alpha, so it is usually a pack leader and uses its size and power to intimidate others. The Grey Wolf is a symbol of the Stark family, which means they’re a member of House Stark. The Grey Wolf’s coat changes in color depending on what season it is during; grey shades indicate winter while darker colors indicate summer. This can help readers identify different seasons when reading the novels because it actually happens in real life: the snow turns white in winter and the terrain becomes much more brown in summer.
In contrast to the Grey Wolf, Stone Wolves only weigh about three-quarters as much as their larger cousin, making them easier to control for humans but still powerful nonetheless. The Stone Wolf has a lighter coat color than the Grey Wolf and looks like a cross between a grey wolf and golden retriever mixed together! They are known for being fast or agile instead of just being powerful (much like Arya).
Stone Wolves typically live in packs with other Stone Wolves but can also be seen living alone or even with other species, including humans. This dog was likely brought over from Essos by Tywin Lannister during his invasion of Westeros just before Robert’s Rebellion took place.

Did Sophie Turner adopt her Dire wolf?

The Grey Wolf
If you’ve read the first book in the series, A Game of Thrones, you might be familiar with a certain dire wolf. This particular dire wolf is named Grey Wind and he is owned by King Robert Baratheon’s daughter, Sansa Stark. King Robert believes that wolves are sacred to the gods and names this particular one “Grey Wind.” He uses this name because he believes that if he dies (which is a very likely possibility) his children will have a better chance at survival because they will have the protection of the gods. The word “grey” in this instance refers to the color of clouds or fog.
According to George R. R. Martin, it is said that Grey Wind is able to smell fear in other animals and can then bring down its prey with ease. I guess there must have been some intense training going on when it came time for these wolves to be used as heroes in ASOIAF!
The Stone Wolf
Game of Thrones has also given us another type of dire wolf: Stone Wolves! Of course, if you haven’t read A Game of Thrones yet, you might not know what these beasts look like—well we should hope so! But really, if you thought about it for a minute, why would anyone even bother naming their dire wolf? It would be like calling your dog something like “Stone-Dog-Face” or “Stone-
