Wolfdogs are a unique breed of dog, often referred to as the Amish of dogs. The German word for wolf is “Wölfe” and the name therefore literally translates to ‘Wolfdogs’. The Saarloos Wolfdog originates from northern Germany and is an ancient breed which has remained relatively unchanged since it was first documented in 1650. In their native habitat, they lived in packs and were excellent hunters working together as a team. They had to adapt quickly when humans came into contact with them and many wolves were killed by settlers. However, those that survived were able to take advantage of the new resources that were available such as livestock and thus began to form tribes.
The modern-day Saarloos Wolfdog is an independent dog who does not appreciate being told what to do or where to go; however, he can be extremely loyal if treated well and trained from an early age. Wolfdogs are often referred to as ‘the soul of the forest’ because they possess such an instinctive understanding of nature and are able to read its signs with ease. If you live in a rural community or have access to acres of land then this makes an ideal pet for you! Without human intervention these dogs would be unable or unlikely to survive on their own for extended periods of time so it is important that they feel secure at all times. Following are some facts about this fascinating breed:

In short, yes. The Saarloos Wolfdog is a cross between the German Shepherd and the Czechoslovakian wolfdog.
The German Shepherd is known for its intelligence, versatility, and strength. It’s also worth mentioning that there are three distinct types of wolfdogs:
1. The American type has been bred to resemble wolves with slightly longer legs and muzzle than their European counterparts
2. The European type has been bred to resemble European wolves with slightly shorter legs and muzzle than the American variety
3. The Asian type resembles Japanese wolves with a more pronounced physical build than either of the other two types
